DISEASES PRONE TO BUDGIES
Unfortunately, the budgie is just as prone to diseases and illness as you and i.
I thought its a good idea to make a list of these to give everyone
(particularly) those of you that are beginner budgie owners or breeders
the 'know' on how to prevent, spot and cure these.
ENTERITIA
Sadly, enteritia is one of those diseases that can be fatal to your budgies
health if it's not sorted out as soon as it's spotted. Basically it is caused
by not feeding your budgie correctly and feeding them only with what you eat,
for example cake, potato and various other starchy, sugary foods. The signs of
enteritia are diarrhea, your budgie keeping itself to itself (keeping the head
tucked under the wing, feathers fluffed and withdrawing itself from you) and be
ing uninterested in everything. The liver gets very run down and stops working properly.
The best way to cure enteritia is by covering three quarters of your budgies cage,
sitting the cage safely in front of a source of heat (fire etc) and letting them sit
in the warmth and resting. Step two to the remedy is sprinkling powdered Bismuth
Carbonate over their seed. The best seed to use when your budgie is suffering with
this is mullet spray seeds as they are easy to digest.
OVERGROWN BEAK AND CLAWS
This is best to prevent from hhappening by cutting your budgies beak and
claws frequently but taking a little amount off. It can be very uncomfortable
for your budgie to have overgrown claws when perching and they could hurt
themselves trying to fly off. I would recommend using a snap nail clipper,
and remember, be very careful that you don't cut them too short!
EGG BINDING
Hens are the only sex of budgie that suffers with this nasty illness,
as I'm sure you already guessed. One of the biggest causes is by allowing your
budgies to mate in the cold months of the year, especially in January and
February. Again, it's best to just prevent this one rather than having to cure.
The best way to cure egg binding is with hear administered by a hospital cage
(these are great as you can monitor and change temperature accordingly easily)
.If you do not have one, then keeping your budgies cage near another type of
heat will work too (fire, radiator etc). In extreme cases, you can wrap your
bird in warm towel, holding them near the heat, and then putting them in their
cage for heat once they have improved. It's a safe bet that the egg will then get laid.
FITS
If you keep your budgies cage in direct heat and sunlight, where there is
no relief, then there is a good chance they will fit, particularly in the hot
summer sun. Prevention is better than cure, as they say, and considering that
all you have to do is be conscientious about where your budgies cage goes, the
n I'm sure you'll agree that it's better to just not be careless. Keep them
where it's light, but not in the sunshine and fits should never be a problem.
The cure for fitting is by leaving your budgie in peace and quite with their
cage covered. Avoid any loud sounds or sudden movements and in a couple of hours,
you can gradually start to remove the cover on the cage.
