HOW IT ALL BECAME.
The history behind how we know the budgie as being today, is actually quite fascinating.
The original budgie, from its wild start in Australia is almost unrecognisable when put
side by side with today’s budgie. It was a small, weedy looking bird with poor quality of
the head. The difference now is amazing, particularly when compared with different,
colourful breeds such as the Cobalt, Albino and Greywing. The breakthrough in quality
and variety is thanks to the British breeders, and these new varieties became distinguished
breeds.
As more varieties and the quality kept improving, the interest in budgie
started growing too. Budgies were being used as show birds, and the number of
classes at the shows had to be increased due to the ever widening variety.
As the quality got better, they were winning awards over other, lower class bird
s and breeds. Breeders were trying hard to keep the improvements happening with
the budgie, and soon a Scientific Committee was started to talk over their
findings and find out more information. There was also the same type of
committee set up in Germany and quickly, a system that worked was made and
they managed to form mating predictions when breeding certain varieties that
were pretty accurate.
Concentration was beginning to be turned towards more improvements on the
newly found varieties of budgie. They were getting bigger, the heads were
improving vastly in quality and colour, and the colours of the birds were
getting more and more vivid with the throat spots getting bolder.
This in turn drew more fascination toward the budgie with breeders and budgie
shows bringing more and more. A chart was made for budgie breeders to work off
that detail what certain breeds are to look like etc, and points were to be
awarded as to the quality of every different factor the total being 100.
The British Budgerigar is still considered the best of all, and to this day, budgies are
just getting more popular. This, of course, means that the quality is still improving and
increasing, as is the love for the budgie.
